Going Down Memory Lane
"Ive never
understood why people consider youth a time of
freedom and joy. Its probably because
theyve forgotten their own."
~Margaret Atwood
Going Down Memory Lane is my first book, which was
released June 12, 2004. The general theme
throughout the book is facing the past, so it
can't hold power over you in the present and
future. Many times even if we aren't blaming our
childhood for our problems today, we tend to
glamorize the past and the innocence of youth,
and long for it at our most stressful or
depressed times in our adult life. But I don't
think youth is as carefree as we like to imagine
it was. Nostalgia tricks us into
thinking that as children we lived in a
"simpler time". Either scenario gives
the past more power over your present life than
it deserves. In this book, you'll find out how
detrimental that can be.
Extended
Synopsis:
The year is 1998. Theresa receives a phone
call from David, an old friend, which prompts a
series of flashbacks going back to the summer of
1983. Theresa and her best friends, Beth and
Donna, were twelve years-old and seemed to have
the adventures of a lifetime that summer. Between
their troubled homelives and encounters with the
menacing Jordan brothers, the three friends lived
through a summer they wouldn't soon forget.
Theresa's family consisted of six
sisters, two brothers, her stressed out father,
and her cold and cruel mother. She always knew
how much her mother hated her, and the feeling
was getting very close to mutual. Her mother
never hesitated to tell Theresa that she hated
her, and during that summer of 1983, she finally
showed Theresa how far her hate could push her.
Beth was haunted that summer by
the seven year anniversary of when her father was
murdered outside of the theater. Now she just
lived with her mother, and it was apparent to
Beth that her mother was acting particularly
strange on this anniversary. If that wasn't bad
enough, the Jordan brothers decided to make Beth
the object of their obsession, following her and
frightening her every chance they could get.
Donna was considered the
fortunate one of the group, but that was only
because she kept her troubles locked away. Though
she loved her parents dearly, they were always
very busy and paid little attention to her. Due
to their stressful work schedules, her parents
fought constantly, and Donna had to live with the
worry that they might get a divorce.
The three friends share in each
other's experiences and traumas, still trying to
beat their childhood demons. In the process, they
have to learn how to grow up through
self-discovery, self-acceptance, and sacrifice.
As they drudge up their bad memories, they soon
realize that their demons are not stuck in the
past where they belong, but are now resurfacing
in their adult years. In order for them to
overcome their traumatic childhood, they must
face these demons head on, no matter how painful
these trips down memory lane might be.~
