Cut The Strings
a poem by Laura Pfalz

When my heart begins to break,
And my happiness grows wings,
I wish I could cut the strings.

When no one is around,
And no one can hear me sing,
I wish I could cut the strings.

Why can't a smile come,
to this face of ailing?
I wish I could cut the strings.

I'm tethered to this world,
and all the pain it brings--
I wish I could cut these strings.

And once I cut these strings,
I'll begin the falling,
The concrete breaks my skin.

And as I breathe my last breath,
And blink my last blink,
I wish I hadn't cut the strings.
